Google Earth 4.3 now has the Ancient Rome in 3D layer which will transport you to 320 CE. You can fly through the Forum, Colosseum and the city.
Now only if we could have layers which will fly us through Mohenjo-daro, Harappa, Kalibangan, Ghaneriwala, Pataliputra, Nalanda, Hampi, or Thanjavur.
Harappa, Mohenjo-daro and the like would have been really great. But, I guess they are far too ancient in comparison to the thousand year old Rome of 320. Even then, Rome had already lost most of its glory by then since Diocletain shifted his capital to Milan and Constantine built Byzantium.
Ranjith,
There has been a project for the 3D visualization of Harappa. You can see some of the samples at http://www.harappa.com/3D/index.html
Also based on the images at http://www.harappa.com/har/har0.html, it should be possible to create such a layer.
OT,
Thanks for putting me on blogroll . Now I can cross this from my ToDo list 🙂
Gaurav,
It is a few years late. Moving to WP has shaken me off my lethargy.
I liked this… I always wanted to “see” Rome in its ancient form but knew that I could not go back in its glorious past… But now with Google Earth, I am sure I can fulfil my long pending wish…
